FREE FICTION, ANYONE?

Before you peruse my collections of short fiction and anthologies in which it’s featured, I’d like to connect you to a novelette I’m particularly fond of. “O, Pioneer” is arguably the only historical fiction I’ve ever written. It was published in Paradox #8 (Winter 2005-2006), a magazine dedicated to stories of alternate-history. It was a finalist for the 2006 Sidewise Award for best short-form alternate history. The story arose out of a simple “what if”: What if Chinese refugees fleeing the Mongol conquest of Hangzhou in 1276 sailed across the Pacific to the West Coast of what is now America? And what if two centuries later, Columbus arrives in Hispaniola and is told of the riches of the Northern Land?
In answer to these questions, I offer this fictional re-imagination of the events of his landing on Hispaniola.
